I just realized that I’ve used songs from The Be Good Tanyas for two of the last three Wordless Wednesday posts. It seems only fair to talk a little about this wonderful band. I use music with a lot of my posts for two reasons, one is to give people who are reading it a sort of soundtrack to go along with the post. Second, I’m hoping to introduce people to bands and musicians that I think are exceptional. The Continue Reading »
Neanderthals are our hominid relatives with whom we shared the Mediterranean region for several thousand years before began to be supplanted by modern man around 45,000 years ago and became extinct shortly thereafter. There are a number of questions regarding their fate, the biggest being why modern humans were ultimately more successful than neanderthals. Some scientist believe that it was modern man’s ability to use spoken communication that allowed us to outcompete (or kill off) the Neanderthals. Another interesting hypothesis, that makes research into the genetic nature of Neanderthals quite current, is that climate change was a major factor in their extinction. But beyond this topical coincidence, any evolutionary comparison that we can make Continue Reading »

And it’s Eastertime too
And your gravity fails
And negativity don’t pull you through…”

Every week that Z and I spend an hour or so listening to an album together I get a little bit more out of it. As he gets older week by week, his expressions get more dynamic and its easier to tell what he likes and what he doesn’t. The last couple of weeks, I’ve been noticing that he responds to the sound of a harmonica in songs, Continue Reading »
That is what I call showing up! Usually I’m pretty happy to listen to the games on the internet, but last night was the first time I really would have liked to be able to watch it on the TV. Even better would have been to be in the stands in Jacksonville at the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. From the sack of Teabag Tebow on the opening play and the fumble recovery in their first drive to the whole Georgia team storming the endzone after Knowshon Moreno’s first TD, I had a good feeling about this game from the start. Georgia was playing with some swagger and passion - in short, the way that they should be playing Continue Reading »
Well, Z and I would like to talk some trash today, but that’s a hard thing to do as a Georgia Bulldog fan when you’ve lost 15 of the last 17 to the Florida Gators. That is a source of shame and frustration to all self respecting Dawg fans. There is no good reason to believe that this is going to get any better this year. The Gators are the defending national champions, and while they are likely out of the national championship race this year, they are still a very strong opponent. They are led by Heisman Trophy candidate Tim Tebow, although a lot of folks think that the Teabag is massively overrated. Georgia is in the midst of a rebuilding year with a very young offensive line and only three returning starters on defense. To be completely honest, the Dawgs have stunk up the field on a couple of occasions this year.
But, all that aside, I’m starting to be optimistic about this year’s game. The Gators are a one dimensional team offensively. Beyond Tebow, there is not much to them. He’s a little bit banged up and they rely so heavily on him that if anything goes wrong the Gators will be without an offense. If the Dawgs get off the bus with the right attitude and go after the Gators hard and don’t make mistakes then this could be the start of turning that 15-2 record around. It’s time to show up, boys.
Z and I know that Georgia’s got the big advantage when it come to the intangibles. The University of Georgia is the oldest land grant university in the nation and the finest in the South. It’s the flagship institution of a state that’s produced great writers, musicians, artist and even presidents. UF is an upstart college built in a swamp in a state that’s produced drug dealers and people who can’t vote properly.
Z’s catching up on some Zs ahead of kickoff. It’s 3:30 p.m. Eastern (8:30 in Britain, thank goodness) on CBS if you’re in the States and internet radio around the world. Munson won’t be in Jacksonville to call today’s game, but let’s hope Scott Howard has a chance to make his own place in Georgia Bulldog radio history as Larry did in 1980 (see the video). Let’s hunker down Dawgs and send these reptiles back to their murky home with a big L to deal with. Go Dawgs!!
A couple of friends warned me that my political fervor would start to cool after having a child. I’m not sure if that is what’s happening or if I’ve just not heard anything in the news this week to get my blood boiling, but today I’ve got my second apolitical Friday post since Z was born. I’ve been a blogger now for a few months and in that time I’ve discovered that the blogosphere is a strange and wonderful place - full of all sorts of things I never understood nor felt the need to know about. One of those was memes. I had only heard of this term from reading Richard Dawkins’ book “The Selfish Gene” in which he uses the term to describe cultural phenomena that represent self-replicating means of transmission - sort of the sociological analog of the gene in Continue Reading »
Yes, it is that time of year again. The last weekend in October, a date that Georgia Bulldogs’ fans look forward to each year with a mixture of hope (we could get them this year) and dread (they’ve beat us 15 of the last 17 times). It’s the weekend that thousands of fans in red and black stream down from Athens and Atlanta and Savannah and other points north and thousands arrogant orange and blue clad folks creep up from Gainesville and points South. Both groups converge on Jacksonville on the St. John’s River for the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party as they have nearly every year since 1933 to watch the Georgia Bulldogs battle the Florida Gators. We post MP3 files on this site. Buying music supports artists and all of these songs are up for listening purposes only for a short time. If you’re an artist or label who wants the song taken down, please e-mail: chris[at]afreeman[dot]org.
