“Do you worry about your health?
Do you watch it slowly change?
And when you listen to yourself, does it feel like somebody else
And did you notice when you began to disappear?”

-British Sea Power – “Remember Me”

In the most recent Word Magazine, British Sea Power gets compared to Portland troubadours The Decemberists. This is just the latest, and one of the strangest comparisons that the critics have placed on the Brighton based quartet including The Cure, The Pixies, Arcade Fire and Joy Division, none of which quite hit the mark.
British Sea Power came onto my radar when we first moved over to Blighty in 2004, but they got kind of lost in the crowd for a while. There were so many British indie rock bands around in ‘04 and ‘05- The Kaiser Chiefs, Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party, Razorlight, The Editors, and so on. It took me a little while to appreciate British Sea Power and when I did, it was for the very reasons that critics have trouble pinning them down with an easy comparison. Their music is eclectic, rhapsodic and often euphoric and they stand a step apart from many of their peers.

Have a listen to “Remember Me”, from their debut “The Decline Of…” and “Canvey Island” from their third album, “Do You Like Rock Music?” which is slated for release on the 14th of January here in Britain and the 12th of February 2008 in the U.S. If you like what you hear then these and previous efforts will be available from British Sea Power and Amazon.
