“God save the Queen,
We mean it man,
There is no future in England’s dreaming…”

For someone born deep in the heart of republican Ireland and raised in sovereign Australia, Dr O’C has a deep and proud Royalist streak. So, our Saturday excursion to Windsor Castle was more of a pilgrimage for Dr. O’C. In fact, I saw her get excited when I speculated aloud about the number of royal asses that had been changed in the baby changing room at the castle (most probably zero).
Pilgrimage or pleasant Saturday outing, Windsor Castle is worth the visit - particularly the opulently obscene State Apartments. Even a cynical democrat such as myself got kind of sucked in to the very British-ness of something like The Order of the Garter. It’s less than an hour drive from Oxford and I must say that I’m slightly ashamed that it took us over three years to make the trip.

I would just like to point out that I voted in favor of Australia becoming a Republic and severing ties with our Constitutional ruler back when we had a referendum. However, I will admit, I do love a bit of Royal Family Gossip:)

  2. Thanks, Chris and Sinead, for the trip to Windsor. Although I was born in America all my ancestors (grandparents both sides are Irish, one from the North). Limerick (I talk to a cousin still there), Mayo and Ulster county. I’ve often wondered if Australia ever thought about breaking ties with Britain… thanks for the info Sinead.

  3. You can’t go past the Brits for history and the Royal Family is part of that. I grew up looking at magazines about Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret so I completely embraced Diana in the 80s. I wasn’t in Aus for the referendum but I would have gone with the republic too.
Great photo of Sinead and Zach. What a smily boy!! (and thanks for the Sex Pistols….takes me back to 1977)
