Shotover

Shotover Country Park sits a few miles east of the Oxford city center. The south and west faces of the hill are wooded and engraved with walking, riding and cycling trails. And, on a rare sunny January day in England, it was our destination for a morning walk.

The Return of Political Friday, Hillary Clinton & National ID Cards

A couple of months ago I declared an end to this weekly feature, but with the 2008 U.S. presidential election in full swing, there has been plenty of political fodder. This week the news has been the news itself trying to what turned out to be a “Dewey Beats Truman” moment in the New Hampshire [...]

Traveling London in his socks

“Heaven knows, she’d have taken anything,
But all night
She wants the young American
Young American, young American,
She wants the young American
All right, she wants the young American…”
-David Bowie – “Young Americans”
If David Bowie is right, then Z will be a very popular young man in a few years as he is now a bonafide American boy. We [...]

Battle well and truly joined

CNN is projecting Hillary Clinton as the winner of the New Hampshire Primary and for some reason has chosen this image to accompany their story. It’s a slim, but crucial two-point, win for the New York Senator and it looks like this could be a long and competitive primary season after all. John McCain won [...]

Guest Blogger: Nathan B. Inside the Iowa Caucuses

Granite Staters head to the polls for the second major event of the 2008 U.S. Presidential election – the first using the good old secret ballot approach to democracy. However if, like me, your still a little confused about just what goes on in the high school gymnasiums of a Midwestern state with more livestock [...]

Z’s Music Monday: Joni Mitchell – “Blue”

“Child with a child pretending
Weary of lies you are sending home
So you sign all the papers in the family name
You’re sad and you’re sorry, but you’re not ashamed
Little green, have a happy ending…”
-Joni Mitchell – “Little Green”
I’ve been listening to far more Joni Mitchell lately than a man in his mid-30s should. This is especially [...]

New (To Me) Music: Powersolo and The Weber Brothers

Ran across a couple of bands – both brother acts- I hadn’t heard before during my trip back across the Atlantic this holiday season.
Powersolo is a Danish punk trio founded by the guitar playing Jeppesen brothers. Musically, these guys are pretty good – hearkening back to an early 90’s grungy blues sensibility reminiscent of Jon [...]

Tom Ames’ Prayer

“Outside the law your luck will run out fast
And a few years came and went
Till he’s trapped in an alley in Abilene
With all but four shells spent…”
I was listening to Steve Earle’s 1995 record “Train A Comin’ ” (Buy) on the way to work yesterday morning. It’s not a great album, but it does have [...]

Airportman: Air travel with an infant and why Air Canada sucks

“He moves efficiently
Beyond security
Great opportunity awaits
Airport fluorescent
Creature of habit.”
-R.E.M. – “Airportman”
I had planned to write a post about our family Christmas in Canada, but I think the pictures tell a better story than I could. Plus, my family reads this blog so I can’t tell the good stories from the holidays. I do want to [...]
