The strains of preparing for a trans-continental move must be getting to me because I’m finding the blogging juices have run bone dry again at this week’s end. Dehisced, I’m resorting to miscellaneous tidbits again
First, an update on my quest for decent kids music. Dr. O’C hooked me up with a compilation from Nettwerk Records called “For The Kids Three”. It features kid-friendly songs from different indie artists – the likes of Moby, The Barenaked Ladies, Of Montreal and many more. I’ve posted a couple of my favorites – Over the Rhine’s “The Poopsmith Song” and Great Lake Swimmers’ “See You On The Moon”. Before listening to these, I’ve got to tell you that “The Poopsmith Song” is deviously catchy. Even if you don’t have kids it is very possible that you will wander around for the rest of the day singing “poop in the potty, poop goes in the potty”. You’ve been warned. Great Lake Swimmers‘ “See You On The Moon” is really the better song. I liked it so much that I went in search of more music from these guys. Their “proper” music is this wonderful nature inspired indie-folk – all banjo and acoustic guitar and glockenspiel. I tracked down Tony Dekker, the heart and soul of Great Lake Swimmers, and got him to sit down with me on the virtual coach for an interview. It’s up today at A Free Man – check it out!

Well, fellow expat blogger (and fan of alliteration) Kathy at What Do I Know gives me more credit than I give to myself. Thanks, thoroughly thrilled and titillated. I’m meant to pass it on and I think I’ll go out on a limb and offer this award to someone I don’t know so well. Ray at Nitro Vista got a well deserved, and much sought after, “I fucking love you” review from the hard to please folks of Ask And Ye Shall Receive. He’s a fellow “daddy blogger” up in the wilds of a Wisconsin college town. He’s apparently also a Wilco fan and as any Wilco fan should, has a witty, wry way with words. He deserves this award much more than your underwhelming narrator.

Interesting that you’re looking for decent kids music…. I don’t think I would ever think that even if I had a kid. Instead I would probably just expose them to the great classic rock music, such as the Beatles, Doors, Floyd, LedZep, Hendrix or Stones, etc… I think I’d throw in some classic punk in there, and some 50’s tunes, too…. cuz by the time they grow up, they might not be exposed to it otherwise, and that would be sad. LOL.

Have you checked out Dan Zanes? My boys grok to him. Also any of They Might Be Giants kid stuff-especially ‘No’. That one got us through colic with flying colors….

I’m sorry, it seems my boys are in love with this song. So, if this post has ten extra hits a day, it’s because they want to hear the song, dance naked, and pretend to poo everywhere they name in the song. Seems I’ll be coming here a lot.

Actually, I really liked the Poop song too……
For great kids music I recommend the ABC’s (Australian version of the BBC) ‘Sing’ tapes….oh, they’re probably not tapes any more are they? Anyway, they showcase an enormous range of music all reworked in kid friendly format. With these tapes the BA and I travelled across France and she was kept in touch with her Aussie heritage through the Bush Band bracket, learned about multi cultural songs like Hava Nagila, Tzena and La Cucaracha, dabbled in music hall with ‘The Gas Man Cometh’ and ‘The ‘Ob Nail Boots Wot Farver wore’, tasted American vaudeville with ‘Alexander’s Ragtime Band’ , was captivated by musical numbers such as ‘Food Glorious Food’ and light opera ‘With Cat Like Tread’. These collections also showcased more contemporary pieces such as ‘There Ain’t Nobody Here but Us Chickens’ , ‘Grandma’s Feather Bed’ and ‘I Still Call Australia Home’. Additionally, the BA had her social conscience pricked with ‘Rip Rip Woodchip’ and ‘Sadako from Hiroshima’. The breadth of genre in these collections is impressive. On the downside, they are all covers and a tad sterile but they are usually pitched well for singing along and lyrics are easy to hear. By all means play Hendrix too, but he’s not so easy to sing along with….arguably.

I warned y’all that it was catchy! I’ve actually got tons of music that I’ve found that Zach likes – from the classics, LB, to traditional American songs, Arizaphale. It’s fun just working out what he likes the best.
