Hello from an internet cafe in the Adelaide city center. You may have guessed from the lack of news here at afreeman.org that we have not yet sorted out our internet situation. It seems that our new home in Happy Valley, a perfectly normal looking suburb in the hills south of the city, is actually smack dab in the middle of a time warp. It appears impossible to get a telephone or the internet or cable TV. We do, and for this I’m truly grateful, have hot water and that fancy new fangled electricity.
So, bear with me a wee while longer. Hopefully things will be back up to the underwhelming standards to which you’ve become accustomed in a matter of, well, weeks.
Sigh.

Good luck, Chris! We’re all rooting for ya!
We choose not to have TV in our house, but I’d never make it going netless. But no PHONE!? Sounds like a Cake song I’m rather fond of…
…so here; feel free to post this as a direct link in the post, or the next one, if it helps. I’m happy to host it right where it is, to help out a fellow blogger.

You’re back! Couldn’t get the site at ALL yesterday. This really is a backwater isn’t it? I hate to tell you but Mum and Dad (whose ‘holiday’ house is in the next suburb to you) will never be able to get broadband because they are on a ’shared’ telephone line. Telstra have no plans to change this. Is that not OUTRAGEOUS??????? Telstra have bucket loads to answer for as far as I’m concerned. It took us weeks to get internet here too. Eventually we had to have some fancy bloody electronic gadget installed in the roof with wires in all directions to avoid the phone/ADSL conflict. Nothing is straightforward in the bush mate. And how about the freezing cold crap weather to boot? Did you bring that with you? Sinead! I blame you and the pram cover (not that we couldn’t do with the rain)……………

Does the water really go down the sink counter-clockwise there?

Good question Nathan. Perhaps Chris can provide us with some video evidence of this urban legend….

did you see that southpark episode where the internet disappeared and the whole country moved west (a la the joads in grapes of wrath) looking for internet service . . . it was pretty funny.
hopefully things aren’t quite that bad in the happy valley!

I stumbled upon your Oz playlist from my Elbo.ws music feed. I just so happen to be studying abroad in Sydney this semester, and coincidence of all coincidences, I’m a Mizzou student.
Hope you get the internet situation worked out, I’ll be looking forward to reading how your move to Australia goes. Best of luck.

Really, if I can get internet service here in Iowa, you should be able to get service in the booming metropolis of Adelaide…

I hope you get this all worked out soon! I depend on Zach for my daily dose of cuteness.
I’m stunned that there is a place on earth that still uses shared phone lines. That’s just unreal.

I had no idea Australia was so antiquated. I could never go without highspeed internet, so I shall have to remain in the US for now.
At least you have electricity!

This totally cured my fantasy dream of moving down there for a few years with Hubbie’s job. No Internet? No bloody way. Glad to see your site is available again, though. I was going through a bit of withdrawal.

Dude, sounds like you have joined us here in Missouri. Depending on the wind we can lose internet service. You know, we can’t even get automatic voicemail when on the line.
