I’m trying really hard to restrain myself from publishing my “Things About Australia That Piss Me Off” post. But if you’ll indulge me just one – it takes nearly a month to get a home phone and internet. It wouldn’t be so bad, but they keep teasing us. Giving us dates and then changing them. Sending us hardware but not hooking us the fuck up. I’m pretty sure I could have had broadband in Kazakhstan by now. For now, I’m still a pirate of the cyber seas – arrgh, mateys.
There are good things. Lots of good things. I’m trying to focus on those on a daily basis. One of them is a beautiful night sky with stars and constellations that I don’t have a clue what to call. I sit looking up into the night sky humming that Eagles’ song “Seven Bridges Road” that Dolly Parton did better. There are stars in the Southern sky…
We also had the unique pleasure of meeting up in real life with a blogging friend. We spent a couple of hours with Arizaphale and her family up in the house in the hills. It was a bit strange (surreal as Arizaphale put it) to sit down with someone that you’ve only “met” on the internet, but she’s as engaging and entertaining in real-life as she is on her blog.
See, not all bad at all.

Longer to get internet than in England? You’d think it was settled by British rejects or something.

I know longer use the internet in work. It’s purely a leisure type thing for me, but I honestly believe I’d go crazy without it. I’m so electronically spoiled.
It’s like chocolate. As long as I know it’s in the house, I don’t really have to eat it all the time, but the second I realize there isn’t any around, I absolutely HAVE to have it.

Internet was my biggest frustration when I first got here, too. It really is shocking that a country like Australia could be that bad with a simple thing like the internets. Hope you get all set up soon because after that, there’s not much to complain about.

Glad you are liking your move (except the internet). I had the same problem with my phone in Iowa. I had internet within a week of moving here but even though my phone was through the cable company too, it took 6 weeks… and of course I was expected to pay for phone service for those six weeks!
Thanks for the reminder about “Seven Bridges Road,” I had forgotten that Dolly remade it. I agree, her version IS better.

Glad you are able to focus on the positive despite hair-tearing frustrations.
Meeting fellow bloggers is fun, but it’s a bit of a crapshoot, too. I mean, what if you don’t like them? You can’t blog about it because that would be a terribly rude breach of of etiquette. Can you imagine? “I met So-and-So yesterday and DAMN that was a mistake. She is not NEARLY as interesting in person as she is in her blog.” LOL Glad that wasn’t the issue in this case. Sounds like you guys had a blast, and a well-deserved night out with friends.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. If having trouble getting your internet hooked up is the most terrible thing, well, consider yourself lucky.

I was so jealous when I heard that you guys went to Arizaphale’s house. I bet that was a lot of fun.

Good job trying to find the good daily…I love the title of this post. I don’t know why, but I do.
I love Seven Bridges, but have never heard the Dolly remake. Going to see if I can find it.

You’re quite right of course NATUI…a crapshoot indeed!! But a calculated one. I don’t know if I’d bother looking up ‘Bitter Mistress’ if she came to Adelaide…then again…..might be a laugh!
(Oh and btw I paid Chris to say that….)

Yes…I live 15 minutes out of a well established and ever expanding rural town and my internet connection, despite being Bigpond Broadband is complete bollocks. Slow, slow, slow. Not sure what phone company you’re using, but there is one in particular that starts with TELSTRA that I wouldn’t recommend to anyone. It could be worse though. You could’ve been putting up with it your whole life!
