Smoke some fags and play some pool, pretend you never went to school.
With exams due, lectures to prepare and reports to write, A Free Man has not enough feet in too many camps this week. My head’s all over the place and I’ve started posts about topics as diverse as sedition, mobile phones, Lyndon LaRouche and my bus ride to work. Instead, I’ve decided to harness all this disparate thought to make a seamless link between Jarvis Cocker and Wee Z.
Jarvis Cocker is one of my rock gods. I selected my last pair of glasses almost entirely because I wanted specs like Jarvis. Really. Like the Barenaked Ladies, Pulp brings me right back to the early days of my relationship with (stalking of) Dr. O’C. She turned me on to the Brit Pop pioneers, among other great bands I hadn’t heard. “Common People” has got to be one of their best and one of the best of the genre.
Almost as cool as Jarvis is Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner. If Star Trek isn’t enough for you, how about his bizarre foray into pop music with another four-eyed rock god, Ben Folds. Agnes, here’s another cover for you - Big Giant Head does Pulp.
Ben Folds is apparently collaborating on a new album with author Nick Hornby who wrote “About A Boy”. The film adaptation of his book starred Hugh Grant in the role of man-child Will.
Hugh Grant also starred as the rakish Daniel Cleaver in “Bridget Jones’ Diary”, a secret guilty pleasure. (”Bizarre what some men find attractive.”). His co-star in that film was Colin Firth.
Colin Firth played Harry Bright, a British banker, in “Mamma Mia”. And speaking of bankers…

He definitely gets this behavior from his Mother, which is reassuring. Fingers crossed that her good behavior genes are stronger than my twisted alleles.

The pig is safer than the real ANZ, perhaps?
BTW, William Shatner is a total car-wreck of tackiness, in a way that has amused generations.

Very cute video! Nice linkage of topics. Reminded me a little of that Kevin Bacon six degrees of seperation malarky. Got a little bit lost for a minute when Colin Firth was mentioned, but managed to focus long enough to move forward! You’ve confused me though with your big giant head reference. I checked out that link - does Mr. Shatner sing that in 3rd Rock or something? I didn’t have time to research further!

Sorry, Agnes, Big Giant Head is a reference to a guest role Shatner played in “Third Rock From The Sun”, an American TV show that you may not have gotten down here. I just assume that you get all of the American exports, because that’s all that’s on TV here - American reality shows (or Australian versions of them) and sit coms.
23 Oct 2008 at 4:12 pm
Headbang8 - Let’s hope the real one is OK. I’ve been convinced by ABC radio and an Aussie banker that the Australian banks have been much more conservative than the US and Europe. Fingers crossed. I may get a pig, just in case.

yay piggy bank. Bet in 30 years take that bank onto antiques roadshow and it’ll be worth loads, like the Royal Bank of Scotland ones are here… at least your money has value in Australia…

We do get 3rd Rock, I’ve only ever seen bits and pieces though. The repeats are on Austar at the moment though and I have seen the odd episode - maybe I’ll happen upon Big Giant Head by chance some lazy afternoon in the near future! And you’re right, all we do seem to get is US shows, or rip off versions of em. Quite depressing. Also the main reason I don’t watch lots of TV I suppose. Don’t know if you’re familiar with ‘Kath & Kim’, but I had the unfortunate experience of witnessing the US version of it the other night. I lasted 5 minutes. Dreadful! It’s nice to know that US TV is just as capable of making shitty remakes as we are. Though it would really be much nicer if they concentrated on making quality stuff instead.

The countdown begins: Mere days before Georgia knows what a skewered catfish feels like in the bayou. To be honest, Georgia is good enough and strong enough, but can Mark Richt outcoach Les Miles? That’s the question. Richt’s bread and butter this season has been to throw it early and often to insane freshman A.J. Green. He’s lived up to the billing so far, and had his longest reception of the season (49 yards) last week vs. Vandy. LSU has no answer, so we’ll cede 10 points because of that. But don’t think for a moment that Matt Stafford will actually have time to plant his feet and throw to him. LSU has gotten used to calling all-out blitzes the last 2 weeks, look for more on Saturday.
Knowshon Moreno is a great back, but he won’t be able to run on LSU straight up, and LSU will not put 8 in the box either. On the other side of the coin, LSU’s resurgent Kieland Williams will supplement the durable Charles Scott and give the UGA defensive line just enough trouble to off-set the passing game. Jarrett Lee will throw an interception, so we’ll cede another 7 points to the Dawgs. LSU has played from behind in all its major conference games this season, this game won’t be any different. In the 4th quarter, when the UGA defense tires a bit, look for the deep ball to LSU’s speedy receivers Demetrius Byrd and Brandon Lefell. LSU 28- UGA 24.

Criminally cute child!!!
I’m always amazed at how William Shatner manages to reinvent himself, over and over. Like being a pop icon in his own life wasn’t enough (I have a secret thing for the Captain - shhhh!)
I totally respect a man who likes Bridget Jones - my husband didn’t like it particularly, but he will watch the BBC six-parter of “Pride and Predjudice” every time I do, so it’s kind of the same.
24 Oct 2008 at 3:22 am
That was stinkin’ cute! You’re lucky that Baby Z doesn’t put them directly into his mouth! SOMEONE I know around my house would…
When I got to Hornby, I thought of the John Cusack movie (loved both book and movie, can’t think of title) and wondered why you didn’t name that one… but then I figured out where you were going with all this. Very clever! Gotta get up pretty early on the other side of the globe to fool me!

SSG - I reckon the RBS itself will be on Antiques Roadshow before too long.
Angel - He ain’t stupid. He’s got a penchant for hording. Usually has three or four pacifiers hidden on his person at any given time.
June - I was pretty excited about it too, made the bank give us one when we opened an account with them.
Agnes - I purposely avoided the U.S. version of Kath & Kim. Just don’t see the point.
LL - We’ll talk about this later, I think.
Noble Savage - Yeah, I’m pumped. Two excellent writers and Hornby’s a pretty good musician as well. Meant to be out in December.
April - Well it worked as designed then.
Toys - God, I can not STAND British period pieces. British RomComs, sure, but no frickin’ Austen.
Toasty - High Fidelity, love it, but I couldn’t get from Cusack to banking.
