I’m cheating a little bit in my choice of the #3 album from an independent or unsigned artist. Actually, it’s my list so I can do whatever I want. But I’m including the latest album from Austin’s Okkervil River largely as a recognition of their whole body of work, rather than the album itself. Don’t get me wrong, “The Stand Ins” (Jagjaguwar) is an excellent album, but on its own it is probably not worthy of a spot this high in the top 10. However, this sextet of Texans has been churning out great records since 2002 and I can’t get enough of them.
One of the wonderful things about Okkervil River is that music lovers of any age seem to really get these guys. I’ve passed their music on to Arizaphale’s 13 year old daughter and Dr. O’C’s fifty-something uncle and they both love it. How many bands out there are accessible to teenage girls, baby boomers and everyone in between? To me, this indicates that you’ve got something musically that transcends generations. That’s something special. And so is “The Stand Ins”. It’s a bit too short with a bit too much ’space’ – in reality it’s just a long EP. It’s not as strong an album as last year’s “The Stage Names” or 2003’s “Down the River of Golden Dreams” – but if you like good music, I can pretty much guarantee that you’ll like Okkervil River. Have a listen to “Singer Songwriter” and if you like what you hear, buy “The Stand-Ins” and other Okkervil River albums from

Tomorrow is Xmas in Oz. You’re not likely to see a warm and gushy festive post here, but you never know. If you’re like me – in other words, dreading most of the day (I know there are some of you out there) – then remember it’s just another day, remarkably similar to December 24 and December 26. Get through 24 hours and it’s done for another year. Boxing Day is the big day for me as that is when we start our vacation at the beach. Posting will probably be sparse until after the New Year, so I’d like to wish my gentle readers a tolerable Christmas and the best of luck in the New Year. Appropriately enough, I’ve also posted a ‘Christmas’ song from Okkervil River.
And I hear that song sometimes and imagine us much more than friends – like if
we stayed in this town, bought the first house that
went up on sale, and how each
Christmastime would bring
in-laws and snowdays and
holiday mail.

Just a reminder on the final contest of the year. Win electronic copies of each of my top 10 albums of the year. All you’ve got to do is leave a comment on this post. Easy peasy. Good luck.

I predict a “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” moment: when Boy Z starts unwrapping those presents, Chris’ bitter heart will expand with joy and happiness. Maybe he will even make Timmons stop wearing those antlers.
Hey, enjoy the beach and Merry, well, you know.

Sorry Jamie but I’d leave that prediction for next year. Zach’s too young to appreciate the full Christmas deal yet.
Whatever happens tomorrow, I hope it is a blessed and bearable day for you guys. You’ve all certainly been a great gift in our lives.

That’s pretty much exactly how I felt about the Okkervil River album: enjoyable, but not up to the standard of their previous work. There are a couple of really stand out tracks, and I love the guest vocals on Lost Coastlines, but like you say it’s more like a padded-out EP than a real album.

Jamie – That’s the only part of the day that I’m looking forward to, though he’s probably a bit young to get much out of it.
Ariza – Whoa. Whoa. Whoa! Unto you a savior may have been born tomorrow (though by most accounts it was probably some time in the Northern Hemisphere spring if it happened at all). Unto me – not so much. Not my savior, not my god. I tolerate the secular aspects of the day, but have absolutely no interest in the religious. So, whether I like it or not you may have a savior to revere, but it’s naught to do with me.
Rol – Who are the guest vocals on Lost Coastlines.

Ariza – Just noticed the nice things you said. Same to you. Been nice getting to know you in ‘real’ life. Probably best for us to not talk religion!

I am like you not looking forward to the day too much, it just feels so “empty” this year. Maybe when I get to my mom and dads house I will feel better. Regardless hope you have a good day. I will have to check the music when i get back home…work blocks everything.

Merry Christmas, AFM, even if you don’t feel it. I hope Santa is good to you. Don’t be all grinchy on him, though. I don’t want you pissing him off before he gets to me.
Seriously, I hope your little family has an absolutely wonderful holiday. I wish you all the best in the coming year!

You know, with this countdown of late, somebody stumbling upon your blog could easily take it for a site dedicated to the intricacies of the indie rock scene. And they could do a lot worse. If I get that iTunes giftcard I asked for from Santa, I may have to refer back here for some ideas. (Not that I’m ever lacking for music to buy, but you can be quite convincing.)

Merry Christmas! I hope your heart grows three sizes just like the Grinch. Be merry, now, and don’t make me sing the Whoville Christmas song to you.

Well my 11 year old & 60-something year old dad both enjoy the Austin Lounge Lizards…but that’s sort of different I guess.
I liked that first one, can see why you’d enjoy it!
I’ve never really thought about the pressure of that ONE day. This is such a hard season for a lot of reasons, but I never thought about that 24 hours being so much different than the rest of the holiday season.
I have a friend who told me she could NEVER be unhappy on Christmas. This is a person who has lived through so very much, survived so much crap. It’s a wonder to me that she can promise herself to be happy on any given day. But that’s what she believes and it seems to work for her.

Did you see OR at St Jerome’s last year? Having them and Arcade Fire in the one summer was bliss.
Enjoy the beach, stay out of the sun, and catch the boxing day test. Oh yeah…. probably not your thing!

speaking as a person who has found the run-up to christmas to be more and more of a chore these past few years, this year went remarkably well (we still have to eat the big dinner, but i think it’ll be fine).
i really hate the feeling of “having to get through it,” tho. i wish i could look forward to it more. however, i am sighing a big sigh of relief that it’s over and for the next 11 months i really don’t have to think about it. : )
p.s. love, love, love that okkervil river song about otis redding. you and agnes are making me into a o.r. convert.

Just got through my own December 25. I’m lying here half dead on the couch. It’s over.
Happy Holidays to you and yours, my friend.

mjrc – Yes!! Our job is done…
Was playing Okkervil to a friend the other day and he described ‘Lost Coastlines’ as a cross between Johnny Cash and Elvis. He then informed me that ‘On Tour With Zykos’ sounded like a ‘bad theme song to a 70’s sitcom.’ Needless to say I informed him that he was not fit to listen and turned it off.
I’m so glad you do not feel the same way!
And Chris, you already know how I feel about these guys. Looking forward to checking out the top 2!

Ariza – Yep. Do. Especially on the eve of my least favorite holiday.
Siren – Work sucks.
Angel – Santa wasn’t great for me, but Zach did all right.
Mickey – I used to do debate in school.
COurtney – It grew about 28%.
Prefers – It’s only partially dedicated to the intricacies of the indie rock scene.
Jill – I think that is exactly the same thing. The Austin Lounge Lizards are awesome.
Father Muskrat – It was OK.
Kitty – Another Adelaider! Welcome. We weren’t hear last year, but that’s a shame because it sounds like a great show! Oh, and the Boxing Day test is exactly my thing.
MJRC – That Xmas song is just perfect. Glad you’re seeing the OR light.
Maggie – Thank god for that!
Agnes – I can kind of see the Cash aspect to Lost Coastlines, but not the Elvis. I don’t know why you got moderated. Weird.

agnes–once i was trying to leave a comment on my own blog and it wouldn’t accept it and it turned out it was because it didn’t like the world “huffington,” which refers to a political website called “the huffington post.” it thought it was spam! very weird and i never could have predicted it.
