I’ve had this late 80’s classic lesbian-folk song in my head for the last few days – I blame The Office – and the only way I can think to get rid of it is to pass it on to you. So, sorry…
I went to the doctor, I went to the mountains
I looked to the children, I drank from the fountains
Theres more than one answer to these questions
Pointing me in a crooked line
And the less I seek my source for some definitive
(the less I seek my source)
The closer I am to fine
The closer I am to fine…
Yeah.
The worst thing about vacations is that they have to end. I’ve got 16 hours or so before I have to walk into my office, which isn’t the worst thing in the world. But after eleven days away it’s going to be a bit of a shock.
You may have noticed that I didn’t write about the holidays. If you’re a frequent visitor, that shouldn’t have been a surprise. They’re done and dusted for another 355 days and for that I’m grateful. Christmas was. That is all I have to say about it. While Dr. O’C is a sucker for Santa she could care less about that creepy little New Year baby. So we unanimously ignored New Year’s Eve and, like two people of twice our age, were in bed well before the proverbial ball dropped. I was even too lazy to insure a year of good luck by going on a hunt for black-eyed peas and collards. So if it all goes tits up this year, it’s my fault. Sorry.
I’m fairly certain, however, that 2009 is going to rock. 2008 was a fantastic year for A Free Man and the new one is poised to get even better. Hell, it already started with a Georgia Bulldog victory and I just don’t see it going anywhere but up. All I have to do is stay out of the way and not try to run things – try to avoid seeking the source for some definitive, if you will.
Easy peasy.

Hope you have a great start to 2009.
Take care.

Who is the creepy little New Year baby? Haven’t heard of that….
Meanwhile, I’m sure 2009 will rock for you too. Must catch up soon!

Happy New Year. I wish I had been in bed at that time. Unfortunately I was forced to stay up, go to a bar and drink so I wouldn’t fall asleep standing. Next year I’m staying in bed and I won’t feel bad about how I’m getting old for one second. I felt reaaaaaaaaaaaally old trying to stay up late and party, as if I still had it in me.

I love that song! Unless it gets stuck in my head, and then well… I better go put on some music, quick! ;-D
I’m just the opposite when it comes to the holidays — not much for Christmahanakwanzaka (it’s so out of control!), but New Year’s is one of those basic, simple holidays that I can really get behind. A little food (we do new year’s eve gumbo and new year’s day black eyed peas), a little beverage, a little music, and that’s it! Poof!
Anyway, happy new year to you!

You know what’s ironic about that song? I’ve used it to define myself multiple times on and off throughout the years.
The kids go back to school (and so I go back to work) tomorrow after a two week hiatus and I find myself unexpectedly sad today.

Unexpectedly sad? Oh Maggie . . .
Glad you’re back safe and sound.

Well, you don’t have to go see the Doctor of Philosophy seeing as you are one. You’ve spent your years prostate to the higher mind. Now you can torture your students in your turn.

I love this song. I thought this song had a dark mood to it which I loved and at that time when it was release there weren’t much songs that were so good acoustically. I was glad I stumbled upon this song again.

Thanks for the earworm.
For New Years Eve we did the usual: hid under the bed. But we DID do black-eyed peas and pork. So there’s that.

So true. The more I let go the more I adore being pointed in a crooked line.

I like that song, too. I don’t like the end of a vacation. My dog likes to drink from the toilet.

Teri – Hi! A new reader – hurrah! I like the Indigo Girls as well – that album was the soundtrack of my 19th year.
Ariza – I’ll find you a link when I get to work. May be an American thing. How about Tuesday? I’ve got the day off, I could pop by with Zach?
Bluestreak – Yep. Takes a hell of a lot of pressure off on New Year’s Eve if you just don’t care.
Alice – I’m in a similar spot – loathe Xmas, ignore New Year’s. So, off the two New Year’s is better
Jill – And you.
Maggie – So did I. Especially in my struggles to get through college. I’ve sang the song, euphorically, just countless times.
April – Maybe I’ll grow a beard down to my knee.
Steve – Another new reader, bonus! It is a great lyrical song isn’t it?
TUB – I hope I haven’t buggered up 2009. Dr. O’C pointed out that anything that goes wrong this year is my fault.

I hope 2009 is all you want it to be.
Jeff and I had the kids watched, but cancelled our plans with our friends at the last minute. We came home, made a fire in the fireplace, drank some chianti, and read in peace and quiet. It was really a great way to end the year. We were also both asleep before the ball dropped!

Any post tied to the Girls is good by default! Sorry your vacation is about to end. At least you can give your students a good mental spanking to make yourself feel better.

I remember that scene on The Office where Andy and Jim sing that song. Now whenever I hear it, after the chorus I always think, “TUNA! Are you KIDDING ME?!”
Oh, how I love that show.
I hope 2009 is great for you and me both.

2009 will indeed rock. I feel it in my waters, or my bones, or where ever it is that one feels such things. The snakes sign is a worry though, I’ve had near-snake encounters recently and it’s starting to give me the heebeejeebees.

Oh my gosh, I just realized what that sign is saying! I admit that I didn’t really look at it yesterday. I came back this morning because my feed is screwed up and I didn’t know if you’d updated or not. I think I must have just skipped right over that sign the first time.
I have an outrageous fear of snakes. I can see them on the Discovery Channel, and I’ll have nightmares about them. No idea where it came from, I was raised on a farm, for goodness’ sake. Have you actually come across any really scary ones since your move down under??

JK – It’s so anti-climactic, the turn of the New Year – been there, done that. I think it’s great that you do a fake countdown for the boys.
Flutter – Shit, I know. Sorry.
NATUI – No students this term, I’m just doing the writing job for a few months.
Courtney – I know. We just ordered Season 4 on DVD.
Kitty/Angel – I’ve not, yet. I’m keen to run up on one. Go all Steve Irwin on it. Or not.
Nathan – Nope, Dwight all the way. And Angela, I love Angela.
Prefers – Sounds pretty good, call me up next time.
Andrew – And to you!
