Today is a public holiday in South Australia – for the Adelaide Cup. That’s right, the entire state is shutting down for a horse race. It’s probably a good thing that the British kept Australia under their imperial thumb for so long or we’d likely be firmly entrenched in the third world by now.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ll take the day off. A long weekend is a long weekend regardless of the reason. Here’s a bit of our long weekend so far in photos…

hey, who got married?
this weekend I got very inebriated at a wine tasting on Friday night, then recovered Saturday by going shopping and almost running over some people, and Sunday had a massive roast dinner, with cheesy leeks and mashed carrot and turnip. YUM!

My weekend weather looked something like that finally! No snow or ice even though we did end up with rain and tornado watches late last night.
I think boy Z is having such a wonderful childhood, by the way. You know… petting zoos and such around here are goats. There it’s a kangaroo?! How cool is that.

Looks like a great weekend. Yeah, who got married? And why is Dr OC speaking? Looks like a nice venue…Mt Lofty? Eagle on the Hill?
And what about that cricket bat! Slasher! heh heh heh
We totally went with the horse race thing dude. Pop over and see how I am inculcating my child in the evils of gambling…..

I love and approve of having a holiday on account of a horse race. Seriously! That’s EXACTLY the type of society I want to live in. The antithesis of that is Saudi Arabia—a place where happiness and joy is illegal.
Does anybody ever ask what the “G” logo on his tee shirt means?

Do they really have boxing kangaroos? I’d like to beat up a kangaroo. Show ‘em who’s boss.

If you supply Little Man’s size, we can get him an Auburn shirt….only slightly kidding.
Looks like a fun holiday. I spent the bulk of my weekend tinkering with autos and spring cleaning.
One a beer note, I discovered a Hefeweizen by Shiner that’s not half bad.

Wow, they really have a holiday for a horse race?? I don’t think they even did that when we lived in Louisville for the Kentucky Derby! Looks like you made great use of the time off.

Wow. Shut down for a horse race? That would be like Atlanta shutting down for a NASCAR race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Love the picture of Boy Z chasing the ‘roos!

We had a holiday too, but it was for Labor Day. Our horsy day off is in November for the Melbourne Cup. Completely idiotic reason for a day off, but you’ll never hear me complaining about it!
My weekend: Saturday arvo spent with my gorgeous nephews. Saturday night watching my friend’s band play and having a few drinks afterwards. Sunday arvo a walk through the bush and a spot of fishing. Monday morning breakfast with the family, including more quality time with the nephews. Monday arvo sitting in the backyard on a deck chair soaking up the sun.
Can’t get much better than that…

looks very lush up there – are the sticking to the water restrictions? I did what any bike crazy nut in training would do, I rode and rode until I got heatstroke and had to lie down for a long time.
…. it was great.
