I think, you know that sort of same thing, that maybe I'm insulated. But then again, listening to/watching O'Reilly (or as a friend of mine, a Republican fer cryin' out loud calls him, O'Vile-y) makes me physically ill.

Not that I've ever heard Michael Savage, but I'm sure I prefer<a href="http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/SavageLove?oid=1395633" rel="nofollow">Dan Savage.</a> :-) :-) :-)

Ooooo.... this is fun post! I don't know if socialism is the way to go (mostly because I'm ignorant on the topic) but I know it won't happen. At least, not in my lifetime or my son's lifetime. Shit, we've still got people in a fit that we've got a black president. It's unbelievable to me. Skin color STILL is a source of prejudice. A man is given less rights in our country because he doesn't love women. A guy cuts his wife's head off and it's barely a blip on the news radar, but this other guy is involved in dog fighting... STOP THE PRESSES!!! As a note, the dog fighting thing is horrible, but that's not the point right now.

What I do know is that there's a mess in DC to get cleaned up and sorted out. Earmarks, scandal, lobbyists, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

I dunno what I'm getting at. I still have my fingers crossed for our current administration.

Honestly, all I want is a government that works. I don't care how big or small the government is, as long as the system uses my tax dollars for domestic tranquility, common defense and general welfare of the people, I'm sound as a pound.

I find it difficult to listen to diatribes from the left or the right. I suppose if there is one person I read, but don't always agree with from a conservative standpoint, it would be George F. Will. I also enjoyed the comments of James Baker, the former Sec. of the Treasury and Sec. of State.

That said, I see myself as a fiscal conservative and a social moderate.
How others see my politics is anyone's guess.

I hate the lack of true discussion, true debate, the kind that I hope still occurs in smoky rooms throughout the country, where politicos aren't vying for the spotlight, but are seeking to reach win-win solutions, agreeing to disagree, and making concessions and compromises to keep things moving.

It has always amazed me how quickly think that if you don't agreee with them they are an "idiot". Huh? How did this occur. I understand how certain issues - gun control, abortion, tax issues - can be polarizing, but being in opposition doesn't make people (de facto) idiots.

"Is this what the right is about - xenophobia, misogyny, homophobia, racism? Hatred, anger and fear?"

Errrr...yes. Remember Adolf?

Sorry to be flippant. I nearly stopped reading the comments after the Noble Savage as I felt it summed things up quite well but I was glad I didn't as Damon's was another eyebrow raiser.
"We believe in the free market because it works."
Hellllooooooooo?????????????

I am politically naive but my meagre understanding leads me to believe that extremism at either end is uncomfortable and dangerous.

I could make some serious statment about the health care comment (as an Australian and former UK resident - and having worked in the public health service in both). But as my knoweldge of the American system is limited basically to ER and MASH, I'll leave it to you AFM.

I cannae wait!
