Watching the rain come in off the Gulf this morning, it became abundantly clear that summer is over in South Australia.

As my mind starts to clear, as the load of a job that went is lifted from my shoulders, I’m realizing that I spent a lot of the summer with my jaw clenched. I let the long, easy days slip away while grinding my teeth over trivia – overbearing bosses, a living situation that was less than ideal. But as these things fall away and my muscles relax and I exhale, I see that I missed a lot over the summer. I missed days with my family. I missed lazy weekend mornings and warm summer evenings. I was there, but I wasn’t.

And I can’t get them back.

I don’t do regret. But I won’t make the same mistake again.

I’ll try to revel in each moment, in each day. Because they’re too precious to waste worrying about minutiae.

Today I reveled in a rainy Australian autumn day with my son.

We played music, we danced, we drew pictures, we walked in the rain.

We ate bread steaming and slathered with butter fresh out of the oven.

And I was present for every single moment.

Clem Snide’s “Your Favorite Music” was a perfect soundtrack for a day of rain and revel. The Brooklyn based band has a new one out this year. Both albums are available from Clem Snide.
