In response to a handful of e-mails, no Dr. O’C has not had the baby. It’s quiet here because I am under water at work – trying to learn calcium metabolism, nervous system physiology and ethical research practises so that I can turn around and teach them. When the baby is born, y’all will be the first to know. Well, not the first. Or the second. Or really in the first dozen or so. But you’ll be among the first hundred for sure.
Dr. O’C is ready. She’s done being pregnant. Done. So keep your fingers crossed that #2 makes an appearance before her head explodes.
I was a little bit concerned to receive the news yesterday that A Free Fetus is a giant. Dr. O’C seems strangely nonplussed. Resigned? But based on my admittedly rudimentary knowledge of physics, smaller would seem to be better when it comes to birthing babies.
Boy Z got sent home from day care today because he apparently has foot and mouth disease. As much as I miss Oxford, I guess it is a good thing we moved from the UK as I’m pretty sure if we were still there we would now have to cull Boy Z and burn his carcass.
Ah….I’m being told that it is actually hand, foot and mouth disease which is something else entirely and relatively minor. No culling required.
That’s good news.

It will be what it will be. It isn’t as though I can shrink the baby now and I am pretty sure starting a 60 a day habit wouldn’t help at this late stage either. Now had I started that back in february, maybe.

My second baby was bigger. I mean, they weighed her and measured her and told me she was bigger. But if you were to ask me at the time “does her head feel bigger than her sister’s head?” I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have been able to tell you, and I’m pretty sure I would have kicked you in the groin.
My point being – all babies feel gigantic when you’re giving birth. It’s just fortunate that we women are AWESOME.

My sympathies to Dr. O’C. The last days of pregnancy are so uncomfortable. My daughter was a big baby – just about 9 pounds. I was a bit scared to give birth to her, knowing she was big. I wound up having a C-section and I was actually relieved not to have to push her out. Yeah, I preferred to have major abdominal surgery than push her out. I’m such a wuss!

Heh. You have to learn ethical research practices so you can teach them. Were you always non-ethical as a researcher or did you just forget because of some of the ways business was done at a certain previous employer?
Also, Boy Z should start a band with the other random kid and use that photo as their band publicity photo. They could call their first album “Boy Z and Pancho Sing the Blues.”
I’m also glad he doesn’t have the similarly named disease that eats holes in his brain.

The whole pregnancy thing has always reminded me of the Aliens movies… Um, maybe don’t mention that to Dr. O’C…
To make up for that, here’s a true story about how calcium homeostasis affects everything: I once had a rabbit come in because her head kept twitching to the side. Her calcium was very low (which is quite unusual in rabbits). As I was sloooowly giving her IV calcium (because if you give it too fast, the heart will stop), she started birthing baby rabbits. See, calcium is quite important.
I’m also glad you don’t have to cull Boy Z and quarantine the country.

Giant fetus! That’s even scarier than foot and mouth disease, but it sounds like Dr. O’C has a good attitude about it. I’m glad you don’t have to burn Boy Z’s carcass, though. That would have been unpleasant.
And don’t think I haven’t noticed your hideous new background. Hey, guess who’s ranked higher than U(sic)GA in the polls? Yup, you know who.

When my second one came out at 9 lbs 13 oz, I desperately wished I had listened to the warnings on cigarette packs, and smoked my brains out. Dr. O’C, I hope everyone is horribly mistaken, and this baby is phenomenally average.

I hate those damn ultrasound techs who measure the baby’s size. About two weeks before my due date we also had a measurement taken which put our baby at the 88th percentile, though they said it could be off by as much as a pound, a freakin’ pound, in either direction and that we shouldn’t worry unless the baby was in the 90th percentile. I don’t think this tech could do math because she was so flippant about it and it seemed to me if the baby was the pound larger it could be that it would have been past the 90th percentile. Our OB/GYN reassured me though, and things went off well, my only issue with the big baby was back labor. I wasn’t going to do an epidural, but changed my mind with the shooting pains going down my legs and my back. Dr. O’C will do great, she’s wise not to be too worried about what is a very imprecise science.

April is right, guessing weight by ultrasound is a very imprecise ’science’ so I wouldn’t worry about it. I’ve known so many women who were told they were having HUGE! GIGANTIC! ENORMOUS! babies only to deliver a 7 lb. 7 oz. little bundle of average-weight perfection. Besides, a head is a head is a head. Doesn’t matter that much how big the rest of the baby is, or how chubby. The heads are all about the same size within a couple of centimetres and that’s what counts when push comes to shove. Pardon the pun!

Culling children is frowned upon in general. I know that “let’s just get this baby out.” I thin it’s natures way of facing birth: you have to what? Yeah, sure, just get it out!

Agnes – I’ll have to break comment love for you again.
Dr. O’C – Better you than me, I guess. I’d be asking for the knife right about now.
Trish – Well said.
Gwen – I would do the same thing. But then, I am a wuss.
Technobabe – Thanks for that. Hopefully she’s reading the comments!
Cat – Yeah, that didn’t happen.
Jan – That worked last time. We’re going for a spicy curry on the weekend.
Jacob – Ethics is hard for me…

Courtney, you know I’m on your side in the college football in Georgia debate, but what polls or teams are you talking about? UGA is ranked above Georgia Tech in both of the polls I’ve seen (ESPN and USA Today). Of course even most of the UGA fans I know admit it’s totally bogus considering the fact that UGA lost its most productive offensive players and had a horrible defense last year, while Tech’s offense should be better this year and the defense is the only question mark.
Maybe you meant Florida. Florida, Alabama, LSU, and Ole Miss are ranked higher than UGA. I’m sure that may rub Georgia fans a little, I guess.

Zen Mom – Me either. Can’t wait to meet my giant son or daughter.
Theresa – I think I’ll use your story in my lecture!
Courtney – Well, about 12 other teams. But polls don’t mean shit. I believe Georgia was preseason #1 last year and we saw how that turned out. There is only one team I need them to beat this year. Well, two, but a win in Jax is about as likely as me waking up on the moon tomorrow morning. So one. Go Dawgs!
Ginny – I told her the same thing.
April – She’ll definitely have an epidural!
HIF – Are you going to look for a big orange T background?
NS – I like the pun!

CMGD – Apparently not, but Boy Z doesn’t get to go back to day care for a while. No rest for his heavily pregnant Mum.
Muskrat – Fortunately, we don’t have to worry about rabies down here. Swine Flu, Emu hepatitis, Koala herpes. But no rabies.
Rassles – I’ve been thinking about that. Depends on sex. Tough one though, tough one.
Heather – That’s why evolution no longer really applies to the human race, we don’t select against the weak.
Jamie – Speaking of selecting against the weak….
Yes, I know the Dawgs are likely to be down this year. But if I were a Gator fan I’d be more than a little concerned about the universal pre-season #1 ranking. Can you say ‘ripe for a fall’?
Jams – How long are your hols. Because we may still be in the same spot.
Xbox – What’s your date? I’m predicting next Tuesday because that would be the worst day for me.
TUB – Good luck.
Jacob – Unfortunately, I think Courtney is right about Tech. It does sting a little bit that the Rebels are ranked higher, but I think they’re more than a little overrated.

Tyler was over ten pounds. Sarah (wife) has an interesting C-section scar because you can see where the doctor made the SECOND cut to make the opening bigger so they could get him out of there.
