Game Day: Goodbye you suckers and steady bad luckers

threedawgs4I think I was far too gentlemanly the other day. In the time since Here in Franklin’s guest post went up, I’ve had some time to reflect on the Tennessee Volunteers and their fans. I said that it had been a long time since the bad old 90’s when the Georgia Bulldogs played the role of the Tennessee Volunteers’ whipping post. I said that in recent years, Georgia has started to take the series back. I even said that some Vols fans seemed to be almost decent people. But I managed to let slide a personal humiliation that A Free Family was forced to endure at the ends of the Hillbilly Army.

One that, on game day, is beginning to sting yet again.

Just over two years ago I was living happily in Oxford, minding my own business when I was randomly called out by another expat blogger. Not one to stand idly by while my honor is being questioned, I responded and things quickly escalated into a good old-fashioned feud resulting ultimately in an ill advised wager. Involving our kids. That did not end well for one of us

I still can’t banish that horrible image from my brain. The Vol Abroad wisely opted out of a bet the following year. And the Dawgs’ win in 2008 just wasn’t quite enough to heal my wounded pride.

And now The Vol Abroad has left the internet*. And a polite exchange with Here in Franklin doesn’t cut it.

What, then, is left for a dishonored Dawg fan with an unquenchable thirst for vengeance?

It is going to have to come down to what happens on the field. The Dawgs need to thrash the Vols again this year. And next year. And the year after that. Georgia needs to make the University of Tennessee their own personal punching bag for the next decade or so. The game today is about more than salvaging a decent season. It is about more than showing Buffoon-in-Chief Kiffin what SEC football is all about. It is about more than ridding the world of heinous hunting vest orange. This is about more than football, gentle readers.

Go Dawgs! This time it is for family honor…

Georgia and Tennessee kick off at 12:21 p.m. Eastern (2:51 a.m. Sunday in Adelaide). The game is on something called the SEC Network in the States or internet radio for those of us abroad.

UPDATE:

I think it is time for Georgia Bulldogs fans around the world to admit to ourselves that the team is really bad this year.

*Actually, the Vol Abroad is still around the internet – just in a different manifestation. But I think she’s trying to keep it on the down low, so I shan’t link.
