I haven’t talked much about the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party this year. Especially when one considers that, as October wound down last year, I dedicated an entire week to a diatribe of loathing against the University of Florida. I invited the enemy into my bosom to speak in favor of his loathsome, repitilian team. I made a lot of grand statements and talked a lot of trash.
And then, this happened. So, I decided to go for a more understated approach this season.
It isn’t just that I’m still sore from that thrashing or that I’ve found love in my heart for the bastards from Gainesville. I hate the Gators more than any other sporting team on the planet. It is just that I’m a pragmatist. It is hard to talk much trash when you’re headed for a near certain ass whooping. The Gators are the defending National Champions, they are the unaninamous number one team in the country, they’ve won 16 of the last 19 games with the Dawgs. Georgia, on the other hand, is unranked, having struggled to a 4-3 record on the season. They have been wildly inconsistent on both sides of the ball. They are about 16 point underdogs in Saturday’s game.
God I hate losing to the Gators.
But here is the thing: the Dawgs can win. Florida has shown more than one weakness in the last several weeks. A really bad Arkansas team nearly took them out in Gainesville. An even worse Mississippi State team gave them a good scare last week. Florida is beatable. They have never had a perfect season, despite winning two of the last three national championships. I think that they are due a loss this season as well. And every now and again the good guys get to win.
The Dawgs can win.
But the probably won’t.
I fully expect the team that collapsed in Knoxville a few weeks ago to take the field in Jacksonville on Saturday. Georgia seems to have some sort of mental block when they step out onto the field at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. I am pretty certain that Florida’s stifling defense is going to shut down Georgia’s ineffective offense. I’d be willing to put a large sum of money on I hope I’m wrong, because I have a chance to watch this game live on the TV. For the second time in four years, and the second time this season, the Dawgs will be playing on Australian free-to-air TV. So, come 6 a.m. Sunday morning, I’ll be there with the rest of the Bulldog Nation. Fairly certain of defeat but still hopeful, as our boys take the field. I’ll drag my boys downstairs to watch my alma mater take the field against their most loathsome opponent. And I’ll watch the whole blasted game. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll be surprised.

One of my favorite British acts, The Broken Family Band released their latest LP, “Please and Thank You” earlier this year. If it stands up to 2005’s “Welcome Home Loser” it is worth the purchase price. Get these two and more by the Broken Family Band at

Keeping it all crossed for you. Won’t you be weary at that late breakfast after such early morning shenanigans though? Sorry I can’t join youse guys but hairdressers, make-ups artists etc call. Don’t know why we’re bothering. 5 minutes at the ‘altar’ in the blazing sun and all our wedding finery will probably be in a puddle around our feet. Let’s hope Georgia does not suffer the same fate….
LOVE that photo btw….

But here’s the beauty of sports. Are you ready? Here it comes:
YOU NEVER KNOW!
On any given day, a weaker opponent can rise above expectations and point spreads and deliver a proper ass whuppin’. We’ll see, shall we?

Yeah. My step-daughter called last night needing more money because she is going with some friends to this game. I love how her lack of planning constitutes an emergency on our part.
Still, I hope the Dawgs get this game right.

Last year, I was in Gainesville judging a huge debate tournament Florida puts on every year during the Cocktail Party. I thought they did it then because the campus was empty and most of us nerdy debate types don’t really care much a about football. Empty campus? Yes. Don’t care about football? Wrong! They actually played the game on a projector in the judges lounge. I had to kind of sink in my seat as I watched the thrashing.

I like you have kept my bluster to a minimum. I would say it is an understated confidence, but that is just a story I tell myself to keep from being afraid at night. It is more like hopeful pessimism.
That being said, I am in full red and black today, had the kids sing “Glory, Glory” for the one lady at day care that is a Gator fan (her parents are from Live Oak, not shockingly), listen to the Redcoat Band on the way in to work, and was sure to openly gig a student that is an LSU fan, but has gone out of the way to make sure the 16 point spread is a joke. Not enough of a joke to bet me on it, but a joke, none the less.
Here’s hoping your lost sleep will not be for naught.
Go Dawgs!

I don’t have much expectation of a Georgia win; Florida has been too good at pulling wins out of close games. I just don’t see it’s being a blowout. Florida hasn’t had an easy win against any SEC team they’ve played all season and they’ve played some real stinkers. I don’t think UGA is worse than Miss State and Arkansas. I think they’re about the same level.

So glad you get to watch…I will be pulling for the Dawgs all the way. Then I’ll watch Vols vs Gamecocks in Knoxville. Florida is beatable and Georgia is due a good game…here’s hoping it comes tomorrow!

Well, I am glad to see there was some kind of post here about the game – even if, to quote Crash Davis, it was some “weak ass shit.” Nevertheless, I feel about the same on the other side of the ball. I don’t want to mock your JV team too much, as I do actually think UGA might win. Not because they are better, but because the only time Georgia can seem to beat Florida these days is when no one expects it. There is no way your crap offense will put up many points, but if UF keeps turning the ball over so much and your defense can score for you, then UGA could win. Hopefully not though, and Richt will get unrelenting beatdown he merits (which UGA deserves anyway for losing to Tennessee).

Because I like you guys and have no affinity or allegiances to any sport teams, I will spend a few minutes hating on Florida this weekend.

Ariza – It does not look like a good day for a wedding – hazy, humid and hot. Y’all enjoy.
TUB – Any given Saturday, huh?
Beth – Well, getting to Jacksonville is kind of an emergency this time of year.
Cat – I can imagine!
BIE – I didn’t lose much sleep, with two kids in the house I’m usually up pretty close to 6 anyway. What’s with these black helmets, though? I kind of wish we wouldn’t do these sorts of things when we’re almost certain to get spanked.
Jacob – Georgia is the same level as MSU? COME ON!
HIF – I’m curious to see how the Vols do. They are better than 3-4 and SC is worse than 6-2. And I still like seeing Spurrier get beat.
Jamie – We don’t have a defense, so you shouldn’t have that problem with turnovers. In the first eight minutes or so, I don’t think it’s going to be much of a game.
Chris – Thanks!

Chortle. By the way, your coach Richtus is a moron. Cox led a couple of impressive drives against the number one defense in the nation. So Richt pulls him, due to some tipped interceptions that are hardly the QB’s fault. On the first series the back-up is in, he throws an interception that Spikes takes into the endzone. Now that’s coachin’! (As is leading UGA to a 4-4 season thus far, which given Georgia’s supposed talent level is pretty sad).

Bite me, Gator boy. I’m pretty sure Richt put the backup in because we were down three scores with minutes to play.

No, really, even the Atlanta Journal-Constitution sportswriters are calling for Richt’s firing. It’s not as if Georgia doesn’t have talented recruits, but as Spurrier once said about UGA: “Georgia gets all these players — I don’t know what happens to them.” Bad coaching.

Tough loss, but then the Gators are #1. At least the Dawgs will probably beat my schizophrenic Tigers.
The question I have is how long will the fans, alumni and administration stand behind Richt. I think he has proven he is a good coach, but maybe his time at UGA is drawing to an end.

As bad as Georgia is, I’m afraid Tech will go in as an overconfident favorite. I’m trying to find a single ticket to that game if you have any sources.
