If Z ends up in the pros in 18 or so years... I'll find a way to make it to one of his games. But, he better sign something for me. A ball, a stick, or whatever they play with (because I know nothing of Cricket).

There was an AWESOME cricket documentary called Cricket Outta Compton about the Compton Cricket Club - I think it came out in '99 or 2000. It was the first time I'd ever really seen any kind of cricket game - SO interesting!

The only somewhat of a cricket song that I can call to mind is "Sir Don" by John Williamson, but then it is more about the man than the game he was skilled at playing.

I am working with a bunch of footballers, so I have become interested in La Liga soccer. Go Real Madrid! Oh, and getting ready for the World Cup.

Cricket is one sport I've never made a real effort to understand. As a result, whenever I've come across it on television (for whatever reason) it makes absolutely no sense. Which is exactly why I'm sure it must be a great sport. Soccer is easy to understand and boring. American football is the same basic concept as soccer (two goals, one ball) with an insane amount of rules thrown in the mix, and that makes it interesting. Baseball is like cricket in that the method of scoring is not evident to the first-time observer, and I like that. It's the anti-soccer.

Why do people like soccer so much?

Jams - I know the Harper song, through John Peel.

Monty - He was an interesting looking fellow.

SSG - Well that bat you sent helps. Hopefully they don't get any of my 'skills'.

Dan - Yeah, I wouldn't mind hearing a bit of that, I like the Divine Comedy.

Kerry - It's all about learning the rules, once you understand what's going on it's fascinating. Have I mentioned that the Gators are losers?

SciFi - You just need an afficianado to explain what's going on. If you like baseball, you'll like cricket.

Jen - 10cc, interesting one. I lost faith in baseball over the last several years, so cricket is a nice replacement. I actually don't like the 20-20 version, prefer the pace of a test.

TUB - I'm just impressed how easy it is. I know it will get harder when they get older, but for now I am still omnipotent. Bwa, ha, ha!

Ariza - 1. It was gorgeous on Sunday, mid 20s with a nice westerly breeze. 2. The scenario you describe is much more pleasurable sounding than spending a Saturday in July freezing in the rain while other parents race back and forth between the stands and their Holdens to grab another VB and complain about how the coppers busted them for hoon driving and domestic violence on the previous Friday night.

Just sayin'.

Technobabe - I'm sure they do, but I don't know anyone who plays it. I'm happy for them to do whatever they want to do.

Cat - No, Aussie rules is an odd hybrid of Gaelic football and drunk guys with a ball. I like rugby, but they don't really play it in South Australia - more on the east coast.

Jacob - I have a creepy feeling that at least Boy Z is going to be sporty. He seems remarkable dextrous for a boy his age. A tip, maybe don't aim for his face. ;)

Nichole - He does in that photo. And cherry juice all down his front.

Chris - See, now I would rather they be into music. But no matter how much I try to get Boy Z to play with me or dance or anything, he just wants to hit things with a bat. He has started to sing lately, so maybe there's still home. Not Max seems to be a fan of music.

Courtney - You're missing out!

I've never seen a cricket game and have no idea how it's played, but if you like it, then here's hoping your boys take it up. If it were my kid, I'd just steer him clear of rugby, because that's a whole lot of broken bones just waiting to happen.

My nine year old eschewed sports for music. I have to say that a 1 hour practice where his teacher comes to us and we have to remind him to practice a few times a week is preferable to the commitment of team athletics. That and he loves his rock collection, microscope, cooking and the computer--definately our kid.
