I made a resolution this year to try and suppress my natural Grinchy tendencies. Now that I have two young boys around, Christmas is going to start to become less about me being grumpy and self-indulgently miserable and more about them being smitten with Christmas magic.
They’re both still too young to properly appreciate Christmas, but I’m working on a pre-emptive attitude adjustment. I’ve already eaten my body weight in mince pies. Dr. O’C and I have erected our own ‘tree’ for the first time ever. I’m even thinking of taking Boy Z to see Santa’s Magic Cave in the city on Monday. It isn’t entirely clear to me why Santa lives in a cave in Australia, maybe the North Pole is too far away. But that’s neither here nor there. I’m the Grinch post heart-size increase this year, post-haunt Ebeneezer Scrooge.
And part of getting in the Christmas spirit, especially when Christmas comes at the height of summer, is Christmas music. Last year it was a Joni Mitchell Christmas for your underwhelming narrator:
It’s coming on Christmas
They’re cutting down trees
They’re putting up reindeer
And singing songs of joy and peace
Oh I wish I had a river
I could skate away on…”
Joni Mitchell “River” (”Blue”
)
But this year, in the spirit of a better attitude, I’m looking for a more cheerful Christmas soundtrack. Problem is that most of my favorites are pretty somber affairs. I’m not much of a ‘Holly, Jolly Christmas’ sort of guy. For example, Tom Waits paints a pretty bleak, and in my experience accurate, picture of the Christmas experience. I prefer Neko Case’s cover to the original:
Neko Case – “Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis” (”New Coat of Pain – The Songs of Tom Waits”
)
Sufjan Stevens seems to have a similarly plaintive view of the winter holidays, his apparently rooted in family dysfunction:
Sufjan Stevens – “That Was The Worst Christmas Ever” (”Songs for Christmas”
)
I’m not sure who wrote the original (Alan Jackson maybe?) but whoever did must have spent some holidays with the Stevenses. The Decemberists cover is just gold:
The Decemberists – “Please Daddy, Don’t Get Drunk This Christmas” (”Alternative Rock Christmas”
)
OK, OK, festive Christmas spirit, Chris. How about some jazz? John Coltrane’s version of “Greensleeves” is festive:
John Coltrane “Greensleeves” (”Ballads”
)
And this little diddy from one of my favourite Christmas movies:
Vince Guaraldi Trio “Linus and Lucy” (”A Charlie Brown Christmas”
)
Then there’s this Motown classic:
Marvin Gaye “Purple Snowflakes” (”Motown Christmas Vol. 2″
)
If purple isn’t your thing, what about blue?
Elvis Presley – “Blue Christmas” (”Elvis Christmas”
)
I also like my Christmas with a side of sexy:
Mae West – “Put the Loot in the Boot, Santa” (”Christmas Classics”
)
But still my favorite, the greatest Christmas song of all time:
The Pogues – “Fairytale of New York” (”If I Should Fall From Grace With God”
)
It was christmas eve babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me: won’t see another one…
Nothing says Christmas cheer like drunken Irishmen.

The Pogues are awesome. I don’t know if you recall the original MTV video of that one, but they enlisted Matt Dillon to play a role in it.
I am also partial to the Drifter’s “White Christmas”.
Little One is smitten with holiday spirit, and I more concerned with how her mother and I will deal with each other this holiday.
Maybe we could celebrate Festivus….

“Christmas in Hollis” by Run DMC is one of my favourite Christmas songs.
If you’re looking for something quick that the kids will enjoy, I recommend the Barenaked Ladies Christmas CD (my daughter loves it).

I am listening to the Coltrane, nice isn’t it? Yep, when there are children to consider, things do change. Enjoy the trip to visit Santa in the cave.

Yeah, E made Christmas mean something again. I grew up in a denomination closer to its Calvinist/Puritan origins than the rest of the Baptist family of denominations so Christmas never held any real religious meaning for me. The church didn’t discourage families from observing it as a religious holiday, but the church didn’t officially recognize any holidays because every day should be about the meanings the holidays recognize.
As an adult, there just wasn’t much to do about Christmas. If I wanted it, I bought it. If I couldn’t afford it, it was too expensive to expect as a present from someone else, and I’ve never been big on ritual and tradition. I just find it hard to make habits and I never get emotionally attached to him.
Seeing my son last Christmas just be thrilled by the entire experience brought back the part that was so cool when I was a kid. You could give the kid a brick and as long as he could open it, he’d beam and get excited about it. I’ll go back to looking forward to Christmas until he’s old enough to not really care anymore and then I’ll slip back into indifference without even realizing I lost anything. That’s just the way I am.

I think “Please Daddy, Don’t Get Drunk This Christmas” was written, surprisingly enough, by John Denver.
Christmas is, by far, my least favorite holiday (bah, humbug!!!), but even I have to admit to having some fun with it when I had a little kid in the house. And now that she’s past the age of santa, we still enjoy a bit of irreverence and self-indulgence at this time of year… festivus for the rest of us and all that…

Grinch or not, that picture of your son is just delightful. I’m a total Christmas Grinch myself. I get so sick of the canned music at stores. I like your selections of non-carols though.
We have cold and snow here. Feel grateful to be down south.
I wish you and your family a very happy holiday season!

(btw, I just realized I should perhaps be embarrassed to know that bit of trivia. In my defense, I ran across it randomly a few days ago. Before that, I hadn’t though much about John Denver since he annoyed me back in the 70s.)

Well, there’s always the Muppets Christmas or Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Personally I love the music from the Nutcracker. Nothing puts me in the Christmas mood (probably because we went to see the Nutcracker every year when I was a kid). I also love Jennifer Ryan – Fa La La Swinging Christmas (cd is from Brookstone Store). Frank Sinatra Christmas is actually very good as well. If they had a soundtrack, the best would be to Home Alone. The music in the movie is so traditionally Christmas with O Holy Night and fun with songs like Rocking Around the Christmas Tree. I always try to find good music but I hate new stars doing Christmas music (Who wants to hear Mariah Carey or Madonna sing Silent Night? Blech.)

Why does Santa live in a cave? And can the CIA enlist his services to find Osama bin Laden?
Have you ever heard of the Christmas song “Domenick the Donkey” by Lou Monte? It’s a pretty cheesy song that I think is only popular in the northeastern US, but to me its a classic. At the very least, its infinitely better than the popular midwestern song “Christmas Shoes”. Ugh…I can’t believe I’ve endured that song for as long as I have.

It’s been Christmas in our house since Nov 23rd (day after E’s baptism). Got the tree, the village, the lights, the creche, the garland…
I have to put it up early enough so that I don’t get too lazy and decide there’s no point since we travel at Christmas every year.
As an Australian resident, you are surely listening to Six White Boomers…

It won’t get you out of the spirit, but check out the Reducers “nothing for Christmas” off their Redux album. Catchy upbeat pop-punk. Great stuff. I’ve also always been secretly partial to that song by the Waitresses from the 80’s – positive, upbeat and Christmassy. Just don’t tell anyone or they’ll take away my Jewish credentials.

If you wait til Tuesday or Wednesday we could come to the Magic Cave with you. I went to the Magic Cave as a kid and it holds strong emotional memories of Christmas for me. And yes, I did take the BA when she was young too. Our favourite Christmas music is the Mariah Carey album which we play unfailingly whilst putting up the tree. On repeat. Much to Himself’s disgust.

Santa’s Magic Cave? That’s too funny. I guess you have to be creative about things like Santa’s home when you live in a place where it’s warm during Christmas.
I prefer Porky Pig’s rendition of “Blue Christmas.”

Now that I’ve got one of two kids that can understand what’s going on around her, I’ve been trying to make this time of the year an opportunity to re-focus on family. If there’s anything I can teach Ella and Kyle, it’s that you need to occasionally need to recharge your family battery so to speak. Hopefully that line of thinking can help minimize all the other less palatable aspects of the Christmas/holiday season.

Your son looks so adorable trimming the tree! Having kids really does change Christmas in a big way. Liv is 4 this year and it seems like she is much more invested in the whole Santa mythology and all the traditions than she ever was before. It’s very exciting. Maybe more so for me because my family didn’t celebrate Christmas growing up. I guess I’m living the holiday through her. About the Christmas music, I’m more into the slower, sadder songs for sure, though I don’t consider myself a scrooge. I love Oh Holy Night, Silent Night, Hark the Herald Angels sing…I guess I like the religious Christmas music which is odd because I’m not really all that religious.
Anyway, I hope you have a wonderful, magical Christmas with your beautiful family!

Hey AFM! Long time, no nothin’!
I’m glad you are getting all Christmas-y this year. Well, as Christmas-y as AFM gets, anyway. My kids favorite song this year is called “Jingle Farts.” I’m sure you can guess what it sounds like. That and anything by the Transiberian Orchestra are all they want to hear right now. It’s wearin’ me a little thin, and I love Christmas!
