I was at the gym this morning. I’ve become slightly addicted to the gym - not in the knocking off convenience stores to pay my membership fees kind of addicted, more of a twice a week endorphin fueled buzz kind of addicted. Anyway, I was at the gym this morning and I noticed that they had installed a heavy bag since the last time I was there. Intrigued, I asked the guys at the front how to use it. Yes, I know, you punch it. And to their credit, the young blokes resisted the urge to indulge in their generational predisposition to sarcasm. In fact, they took me over and walked me through a boxing inspired workout.
I’ve got to tell you – it was awesome. I’m not a violent guy at all. The last time I was in a fight I was 11 and I’m pretty sure I lost. I’ve got no interest in boxing or martial arts or any of that palaver. But strapping on the gloves and going a couple of rounds with the heavy bag and punch pads just brought out an energy in me that I didn’t know was there. Not agression, it had nothing to do with anger or violence, just some primal male impulse to punch things.
After a half an hour or so, with wrists and shoulders throbbing, I made the decision to take up boxing as a hobby. Or karate. Or ultimate fighting. Anything that involved punching, really.
Later at the gym whilst running on the treadmilly I watched a news (i.e. factually inspired entertainment television) report on the Sea Shepherd ship ‘Steve Irwin’ that had docked in Western Australia. Sea Shepherd is a fringe environmental group that confronts whaling vessels and seeks to stop them from killing whales using whatever means necessary. They’ve rammed whaling ships, used lasers to blind sailors, scuttled ships in harbour, and destroyed nets. The group self-identifies as pirates and has been labeled as terrorists by Japanese whalers and Glenn Beck alike. They’ve been in the news down here recently because one of their boats was sunk off the southern coast of Australia by a Japanese whaling vessel.
I didn’t really have strong opinions about Sea Shepherd when I first heard about this latest incident. I don’t like whaling. I think it’s unconscionable in the 21st century. But I’m not a big fan of extremist tactics either and Sea Shepherd, with a vigour reminiscent of anti-abortion extremists, often put sailors and fisherman at risk of harm or death for the sake of saving a whale.
Maybe it was all the testosterone released by my boxing session, but I got a little hitch in my giddyup when they showed a still photo of the hull of the ‘Steve Irwin’ with flags documenting the ships that they had rammed or sunk I thought – good on them. Fight the whaling bastards. Governments around the world have been unable to stop the Japanese, Norwegians and Icelanders from whaling, so why not a group of environmental pirates. They even fly the skull and crossbones, who doesn’t love a dashing pirate?
I think I’ll even sign up for their next expedition. Maybe I’ll have a chance to use my newly obtained boxing skills on some Japanese whale slayer.
——————————
A few hours later now, fully crashed from my endorphin high, I’m not so keen on Sea Shepherd. The anti-abortion extremist comparison is a good one, actually. Both groups think their cause is just. Both groups think their governments have failed them and thus they are justified in taking illegal and extreme action. Just because I like whales more than fetuses doesn’t make one group better than the other.
So, maybe I won’t be setting sail on the ‘Steve Irwin’.
And something I hadn’t considered about the whole boxing/karate/ultimate fighting idea is that I not only hit but get hit. This doesn’t sound nearly as much fun. So, maybe scratch the mortal combat as well.
But I’ll definitely be back at that heavy bag next time I go to the gym.

I am a believer in direct action. I think it’s effective, and I think it’s morally just. BUT only on the proviso that nobody is hurt, threatened, or deliberately frightened. Direct action got women the vote in Britain, and very grateful I am to those suffragettes too.
I’m not sure about the anti-abortion comparison. Pro lifers seek to deny women the choice of whether or not to continue a pregnancy, thereby denying them basic reproductive rights, and forcing them to give birth against their will. Surely in the midst of the environmental disaster that is our planet at the moment, nobody could argue that anyone had a right to hunt whales?
I don’t know, I’ll be really interested to hear what other people have to say.
Thanks again for another interesting and thought provoking post.

I’m doing P90X and Saturdays are Kenpo, which is mostly just throwing punches and kicks for 70 minutes. It’s probably my favorite of its many workouts, except last Sunday, I woke with a horribly pain all over my back. I guess that shows how long it’s been since I’ve thrown some punches as well.
I’m completely against whaling, and my general thoughts are “well, something has to be done.” What that something is, I don’t know, but… well.. *something*.

Honestly, if they were only hunting whaling species that were healthy populations, I wouldn’t really have a problem with it. From what I’ve heard, they’re basically eating the whole thing, and I have no problem with sustainable harvest for food of any animal. The only thing is I don’t think they’re just hunting plentiful animals. Then again, I’m not a vegetarian.
And boxing workouts are incredibly good workouts. Those guys are in incredible shape.
Joe: I was doing P90X until my masters classes started up and all of the sudden, I didn’t have an hour and a half a day to spend working out. That stuff is legit though. The Kenpo was really fun. I could not manage the yoga, though. That crap is hard.

I don’t think it’s an exclusively male impulse. My favorite “aerobics” class at the gym is kickboxing, and I’d love to take boxing lessons. I’m pretty sure mine is an excessive-latent-anger impulse.

I like your tone in this entry. I took taekwondo in college and while I am not a fighter, I enjoyed kicking people’s butts. Turns out I was pretty good at it too.

I have been going to the gym on my lunch break. I usually just run, but sometimes I hit the heavy bag and my experience is sort of similar. I think of all the wrongs I’m going to right at work and as I’m hitting the bag I think of all my work frustrations. But after I’m showered and back at my desk I end up keeping my mouth shut and staying out of office politics. Ah well its good to get it out.

Dude, you are a seriously good writer.
I bet the world would be a happier place if everyone took the regular opportunity to kick the crap out of inanimate objects designated for the purpose. It might even keep us from doing it to each other quite so frequently.
I’m an exxtremist at heart (the two Xs were a typo, but I decided to leave it). I rarely leave the couch, but in my dreams I’m George W. Hayduke blowing up dams and coal trains.

Nice post. You should have an article in the Advertiser. Seriously, this is kind of off-topic but, I can’t DEAL with the Advertiser anymore. Do you read it? Or do you get the Australian which I’ve sometimes read at work and like much better.
I’m just struck that your blog post here (and many other people’s that I read) are just much better, content and composition wise than anything I read in the newspaper here. It’s sad. Just wanted to vent.

I have written my comment to this post several times, and deleted it several times. In the end all I will say is that one needs to be careful that white/European/christian imperialism is not at play in the whole whaling debate and that we (as the West) are not trying to impose our cultural norms on the cultural norms of another society. The debate should be about sustainability of individual species and the manner in which animals (any animal) are killed for human consumption.
Although I’ve never been to a gym (I like to be alone when I sweat) I get totally addicted to swimming and cycling. But you’re right, I’m unlikely to get hit in either of these scenarios.
Danille is also correct – you should be writting for publication, the press in this coutry could certainly do with some improving.

Gappy – I was comparing the means not the ends. Both Sea Shepherd and radical anti-abortion nuts use methods that are illegal and may end up harming “innocent” people.
Joe – I was looking at that P90X and that looks mental to me. Kudos for being able to do that!
Jacob – I guess my problem with it is the documented intelligence of whales and dolphins, I mean they’re meant to be nearly as smart as humans. I’ve got no problem with hunting rabbits – rabbits are dumb and overpopulated in most places. But whales? Something different there.
Nichole – Yeah, I wondered if I had the same motivation, but I don’t think I do.
Not Barbara – What’s my tone? Just out of curiosity.
Max – That’s the best part of a midday gym session, a break from the office.
Jams – Yikes, guess I should take it a bit easy, eh?
Technobabe – It gets better.
Mickey – I think you should have gone for the triple X rating, really. I’m the same kind of couch extremist.

Danielle – The Advertiser takes factually inspired entertainment to a new and depressing level.
Kitty – I’d like to hear more about your ideas re whaling. I’m inclined to disagree with you, but would like to hear the whole thesis. Post?
TUB – That’s what I would like to try next. But they don’t have one at the gym.

I don’t know, there IS something about seeing a whale get harpooned that makes me want to turn the harpoon gun back on the man (or possibly woman?) doing it. Would I ever do it? No. But I do admire those who try to stop this shit. As I continue to age at a rate of knots, I believe more and more that the animal kingdom is better than the human kingdom. And surely whales are the kings of the animal kingdom so worth conserving at all costs?

I’m interested to see how your boxing hobby goes. I can see how punching a bag is a good workout, but it may be a different story when someone else is punching you. Anyway, the gym is a good thing to be addicted to. I wish I could cultivate an addiction to it.

It’s funny you liken them to the anti-abortionists because as soon as I read that first paragraph you wrote about them, I started thinking of that Roy Zimmerman song “Kill a Doctor for Christ” –
So, if you terminate a pregnancy
That’s murder in the first degree
But if you kill a gynecologist, that’s cool
I think I kind of feel something similar toward baskeball that you’re describing with the boxing. I would NEVER be interested in an actual game. Competing or trying to steal a ball from someone would be totally beyond me. But I do like to just stand around tossing the ball into the basket.
