I’ve been informed that Not Max is six months old today and that I need to write a post commemorating this because I did so for Boy Z. So, well done Not Max. Well done for keeping a smile on your face despite dealing with the negligent parenting that is the lot of the second child. Hang in there, Boy #2, one of these day you’ll get one of those beamers back.
Today is also the first day of Autumn in Australia and appropriately the first day of a new semester. I spent a good part of the summer herding failing nursing students through their first and second year subjects and most of the one week break between semesters listening to twice-failed nursing students beg for mercy. The new semester is going to be a bear. A grizzly. A kodiak. I’m involved in teaching six different courses. Those of you who teach secondary school will have little sympathy for me, but for a delicate university lecturer this is a crippling load. I’m also taking a couple of courses for my back up plan.
I recently started working toward a back up plan B, which involves me keeping the job I’m in by doing what the university wants me to do – produce research and research money. I’ve started tinkering around in an immunology lab, hoping to pull some quick publications out of my…hat. I’m not an immunologist. But I’m also not a pathologist and that hasn’t stopped me teaching pathology, nor has the fact that I’m not an anatomist stopped me teaching anatomy. Etc. My real enemy is the time, or lack therof, in the day to fit in all these back up plans as well as doing the job for which I was hired. I fear that things are going to start to suffer. Like this blog.
What the hell? This was supposed to be about Not Max and here I am blathering on about me. Shut up, Chris.
Happy un-birthday, boy #2, the neglected one, laughing boy. Keep working at it and you’re bound to get you father’s attention over the next six months.
Finally, I couldn’t resist this photo of Boy Z. He’s learned to trust his cape.

This is the second track from R.E.M.’s 2001 album “Reveal”. I’ve never thought of it a a great R.E.M. album, but it’s sounded pretty good this summer. As an aside, one of my students told me that R.E.M. was “old people’s music” last week, to which I responded with a suggestion that she could kiss my backside. R.E.M.’s “Reveal” is available from

I would like to point out that you are the only negligent parent around here! I give him plenty of attention:)
I also kind of thought that a birthday post should be about the birthday boy and not the overworked bubba….

I was child number four. I was the first girl, so there was a spike in picture taking immediately after my birth, but apparently the novelty wore off after a few weeks. My parents have boxes and boxes of photos of my oldest brother, but the pictures of the rest of us combined fit in one small shoebox.
So… it’s a time-honored tradition. Keep it up! Not-Max probably won’t turn out all bitter and angry or anything like that. Probably.

I am guessing this post is supposed to be about Not Max.. but to be honest, that picture of Boy Z’s caped crusader impression pretty much stole his thunder.

As is usually the lot of the second child, even his half-birthday celebratory post ends up being about the older sibling.
Happy half-birthday, Not Max. Some of us still think of you as equal.

Second child syndrome is part of the human condition. The first one is a shock to the system and all subsequent children get a bit less attention. It’s perfectly natural and there’s nothing wrong with it. I wonder if that’s the case in the animal kingdom as well?

Not Max – who is absolutely adorable, btw – is not going to suffer from being the second child. Quite the contrary – you’ve got your parenting groove on now; you’ve got a good idea of how to handle it all and you’re more relaxed. I’m sure he won’t appreciate it then, but it this will be even more true during the teen years – he’s got Boy Z to warm you up for all that mess.

Not-Max. When you read this as an adolescent and are tempted to use this as proof that you really are unloved and under-appreciated, please remember that you were only 6 months at the time of this writing and babies are horrendously boring. The first one is only interesting because it’s new. By the time you come around, the baby crap is old hat. It’s kind of like ski jumping when no one is crashing. It was interesting the first round, but the second round is pretty boring because it’s just the same old, same old. Now, if your father continued to ignore you once you started running and talking, and making bad toddler jokes, then you really are inferior in some way and should go goth or whatever it is that is suitably sad and counterculture when you read this.
A Free Man, I will use this as a reminder of why I don’t want a second child. I find it difficult to keep my interest up for my one kid at times. Yesterday afternoon for example. I’m sure I could ever manage two.
Also, I’m curious about how that jump ended. I could easily see that flight ending with a face plant.

Sitting up on a baby like at only 6 months? That’s pretty advanced.
Maybe he’s the smarter of the two. But comparisons are odious, right?

That Not Max is such a cutie!! And I am confident that his parenting is being taken care of by Dr O’C. Which is why he is smiling.
Seriously though, as a secondary teacher, I empathise with the 6 courses thing! I mean, are you a masochist?????? I only have 4 this year and that’s plenty. AND you’re going to study????? Do the words ‘biting off more than you can chew’ mean anything to you? And don’t say I should know….I already resemble that remark.

You just wait until Boy Z tries to jump off the roof dressed like Batman in two years. The results of this affair will be quinary:
1. Awesome picture
2. You will be secretly proud of his recklessness
3. You will never allow Not Max to be as adventurous as Boy Z, because now you know what to look for.
4. Not Max will probably grow up very studious and responsible, angry and brilliant, hilarious and properly self-deprecating.
5. Boy Z will be one of those struggling natural leaders with no fear of authority and too many dreams, and he will end up very confused but oddly worldly.
OR I could be talking about me and my little sister. Whatever.

REM is old people music? WTF? Really?
I just bought New Adventures in Hi Fi this week, which is an album I’d just kind of skipped over. I’ve been marveling at how REM doesn’t really make duds, do they?
