This advert made me laugh out loud when I saw it in the local “newspaper” today:

It’s kind of an inside joke – Australians will definitely get it. For you non-Australians, let’s just say that if I were so inclined, I could quite easily produce a Mullets of Adelaide photoblog with daily updates. Without even venturing into the northern suburbs.
Beyond that, I’ve got nothing to say except that my monthly science post is up at The Greenists.
Hasta la vista from Bogan Central.

I live in the Munich suburb of Bogenhausen. Australians seem to find this funnny.

“Mullets,” as in the hopelessly outdated red neck hair style? Or a different kind of mullet? Do Aussies know what a “red neck” is?

So… if this was an ad in America, it would read “More Mullets than a NASCAR Race!”
Right?

I’m glad to see the good old “business up front, party in the back” hairstyle is seen in Australia too. Makes you feel a bit like you’re in the American South again, I bet.

I recently worked with a five year old who had a mullet so AMAZING that my co-worker and I were holding back TEARS when we met him. It went all the way down to his waist. The worst part was, we were warned in advance that he had “crazy” hair, so we thought we were prepared. We were not.
and I have a photo.

SSG – You’re a bogan.
No. Think chav and add an Australian accent.

HB – Bogan house. Heh heh.
TUB – The play on words is mullet: a) delicious estuary fish b) much loved hairstyle.
CMGD – You got it!
SSG – Here’s more on bogans: http://www.bogan.com.au/definition/index.php
or this from Wiki: Similar concepts exist under other names in other countries, such as chav, scally or pikey (England), ned (Scotland), scanger and spide (Ireland), tokkie (Holland), Proll (Germany) and white trash, redneck, hick, hillbilly (North America), or baianão (Brazil).
Courtney – You don’t know how many times I feel like I’m living in Birmingham, Alabama.
Danielle – I saw a great one on my way to work today. The rare East Asian mullet.

hmmm, interesting. Though I can see the chav, ned, scally etc, I always thought a redneck/ hill billy was different. Like wearing dungarees and chewing on grass. Or something. Is a redneck Britney Spears then?

Mullets make me laugh, but rat tails make me screw my nose up in disgust. You know what’s worse than both of those put together though? Undercuts. I was a teen in the 90’s and a couple of my female friends even got them.
Not. Attractive.

As a former Sydneysider, I was unfamiliar with the term “bogan” until I met a girl from Adelaide who filled me in… In Sydney “bogans” were referred to as “westies”, ie those from the western suburbs who were not unknown to sport proud mullets… I don’t know if bogan is exclusive to Adelaide, but it’s definitely not a Sydney thing! And yes, Unbearable Banishment, Aussies know what rednecks are!

Having just recently visited Adelaide I can only agree that Adelaide was surprisingly bogan and that the mullet was everywhere. I found it strangely appealing, especially to see so many normal-looking people (though I confess that the mullet haircut shouldn’t be called ‘normal’) at the wonderful Fringe Festival – it made me want to break out my flannie!

Mullets! We have them here too. We use the term ‘hick’ instead of redneck here. We also have yokel, but that is more of a joke ‘local yokel’ is a beer here.
Hicks = rural and uncultured
Redneck = possibly dangerous

I was mulling what would be the “Adelaide of America” but I think you’ve got it: B’ham is as good a candidate as anywhere. I imagine they have a fair sampling of neck awnings.

What, kind of like Kentucky? I visited there with my native wife a few years ago and was amazed at all the mullets.
I would RSS that blog.
