I want a wish a Happy Mothers’ Day to my Mom…

…and their Mum.

Because this raising of boys is a tough gig, even if they don’t grow up to be cowboys.

I’m a fan of the original version of this song, but today isn’t about me. I thought my special lady friend might appreciate the Lucinda Williams cover. This one and several other great covers (including a fantastic Dwight Yoakam cover of “Give Back the Key to My Heart”) is from “The Imus Ranch Record” available at

Happy Mother’s Day to your mom and to the mum.
Sometimes my mom complains that I couldn’t have gone further from her. Maybe she’s right, but with Skype, I probably talk to her more that I would have if we lived in the same city. And we fight less.

I love, love this song. Last week the power unexpectedly went out on campus, and my night class was cancelled. Instead, I took a few of my students out to the park at night to chat. As Chinese oft do to pass the time, one of my students asked me to sing them a song so I sang “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain.” Sometimes I feel like Willie Nelson’s song writing genius gets wedged between the passing era of variety shows and pop country.

I did a blog post for my classroom blog when we studied rodeo a month or so ago (rodeo being a legitimate school subject in Texas). I changed the lyrics around some, substituting things like, “Let ‘em be preschoolers”. It was really cute (if I do say so myself), ’cause it has a picture of one of the boys playing a ukulele for the “don’t let ‘em pick guitars part.”
Anyway, my point was that a couple different teachers assured me that people would “get it”. But then my (almost) step daughter read it without realizing it was a song at all!
